A sense of community increases a student’s likelihood for success in an online classroom. Finding ways to facilitate interactions and collaboration helps to foster a sense of belonging for students. It is not uncommon for students and teachers to feel isolated, invisible or disconnected from one another when first transitioning to online. Many veteran online instructors know that the initial weeks in class are vital in building a learning community. When virtual educators are intentional and relentless about being present in the course, open and encouraging with communication and creative with learning interactions, they build learning communities that help students connect in meaningful ways leading to increased success overall.
